Things To Do

1. The Blackwater Creek Trail is one of the most popular trails Lynchburg. This 3-mile paved trail is perfect for jogging, walking, and biking and connects to the entire Jefferson Heritage Trail system which snakes throughout the city.  Segments of the trail include a waterfall, an abandoned railroad tunnel, a bridge over the James River onto Percival’s Island and other breathtaking scenery.  Bicycles can be rented from Bikes Unlimited.

2. Percival’s Island is a great way to spend a quiet afternoon walking or taking a quick bike ride along the James River. This island is approximately 1 1/2 miles long and includes herons, migrating waterfowl, and many native plants and animals as they follow the paved trail, which bisects the natural area.

3. Peaks of Otter, located about an hour West of Lynchburg, is a wonderful place to visit! It offers a lake, wildlife exhibits, walking trails, self guided wildflower walks, picnic areas, a campground, arestaurant and lodge! The hiking trails are Sharp Top, Flat Top and Harkening Hill, all with varying difficulty.
